There are elements or compounds that have natural tendency to react with a metal chemically or electrolytically. This provides the opportunity and a set of circumstances to form corrosion.   • Barrier Coatings
  • Barrier coatings are applied to cooling towers. These protective coatings can be divided into two types – barrier type and sacrificial type. The Barrier type coating paint is designed to create a protective barrier between the steel and the element or agent that promotes corrosion. Most of the coatings are applied in liquid form using brush roller or spray, while a few are applied in powder form, by electrostatic deposition.

  • Sacrificial Coatings
  • Several cooling tower manufacturing units use sacrificial coating, for instance galvanizing. In the process of galvanizing, steel is submerged in a molten zinc bath at approx 850 degree Fahrenheit.

    Galvanizing protects steel sacrificially. The more zinc coating applied, the more years will be needed for it to react with the corrosion elements. However, thickness is not the only determinant of the ability of galvanizing process to prevent corrosion. The process of galvanizing provides the unique property of protecting substrate metal through sacrificial reaction.

Sometimes there are Manmade Reasons Behind Corrosion

There is a time when concern factors are not responsible for corrosion in cooling towers but the negligence and ignorance of the user are real causes. Occasionally, local environmental condition, or circulating water contaminated through specific processes, can make treatment ineffective.
